The MA Building of AUT University South Campus underwent a full retrofit during the summer campus closure months of 2013/14 to allow for the creation of an anchor building as the start the campus development. Being a crucifix form building, a change of use and more efficient of use of space were key goals. This involved a strip back of the building back to the core structure and partial removal of the building envelope to allow for a new Atrium entrance, and two external fire egress stairs. New mechanical, electrical, A.V. and plumbing services were installed, along with a new accessible lift. Hargrave were engaged by AUT to manage the retrofit, working with the design and construction team of Jasmax, Beca and Fletcher Interiors. The short window of construction period available in order to be open for semester one 2014 resulted in a very tight programme, requiring close monitoring.
Our roles and responsibilities:
Hargrave filled the roles of Project Manager, Engineer to the Contract, and Engineer’s Representative. Responsibilities included co-ordination of design team, programme and cost tracking, value engineering, user group consultation, liaising with local authorities to acquire necessary consents, furniture, fixtures and equipment procurement, monitoring and direction of the contractor and contract administration.
